Our Growing Up Healthy Downtown program offers an opportunity for young children and their parents to grow and discover together. A child’s school day is often shorter than their parents or guardians work day. That’s why we have an After School Program that provides after school care for children in a safe and supervised environment. At the end of every school year, and during various holidays, we host a Summer Camp so that kids can continue to learn and grow.
Children’s Program Registration

Registration for summer camp for returning clients (attended camp in summer 2016, or currently in the after school program).

Registration for summer camp for new clients, or those who have priority and cannot attend the Saturday registration.

Registration for after school, for anyone looking to register for the Spring term, for any number of days (April 10 – June 29, 2017). Registration resumes Tuesday April 4th, 2017 at 10 am
University Settlement has an indoor pool which community members can access year round. The pool is used for lessons, lane swimming, family swimming, group rentals as well as other events.
Sharks Swim Team
Join our new Children’s Swim Club “The Sharks” The swim team practices flip turns, dives, variety of drills and workouts every week. The Sharks compete in at least one swim meet each term. (Prerequisite: completion of Red Cross Swim Kids 6)
NEW! Inner Tube Water Polo
Encourages children to learn the fundamentals of the sport while having fun and staying fit. Swimmers will also enhance their swimming, balance and coordination.
Prerequisite: completion of Level 4 or equivalent
NEW! Dive Clinic
Diving is an important skill for your child to accomplish to help them move through their swim levels. During this clinic your child will learn or perfect this skill through drills, practice and games! Prerequisite: completion of Level 4 or equivalent
Private and Semi-Private
Children and adults are welcome to take our private swim lessons. Red Cross Swim will be taught to children swimmers and adults swimmers will have the opportunity to set swimming goals with their instructor during their first lesson and work towards achieving those goals over the term. Private Lessons are a great way for children to perfect a skill they are having trouble with!
Red Cross Swim Preschool (4 children to 1 instructor)
A learn-to-swim program for children ages 4 months to 6 years. Lessons are designed to be fun, using lots of songs, games, and themes. We also offer higher levels of instruction for children ages 3 to 5 which build swimming skills and teach age-specific water safety.
Red Cross Swim Kids (6-8 children to 1 instructor)
A learn-to-swim program for children ages 5 and older. The 10-level program helps swimmers develop the five main swimming strokes: front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, and sidestroke which supports learning how to be safe in, on, and around the water. The program also increases fitness and endurance through enjoyable activities. Swim Kids can be taken as part of our After School Program!
Parent and Tot Swim
We host parents and their little ones for a free drop in program. Guardians and their children who are between 6 months and 6 years of age are invited to come out and splash with us in our pool! This is a free program that is funded by Growing Up Healthy Downtown. A swim instructor facilitates the class and guardians must accompany their children into the water. Songs, games and basic swimming skills are taught during the class as well as free time is given for parents and children to explore the water on their own
Growing Up Healthy Downtown is an initiative between eight multi-service community centers. Through this initiative we are able to deliver free programs and services that focus on improving the health and well-being of young children. We also offer support and new skills to their parents and care givers through interactive workshops and support group sessions.

Free Family Programming
As part of Growing Up Healthy Downtown, we’re offering a variety of free family programming for parents and children to participate in together. Staffed by our friendly Recreation Department, we offer Family Movie Nights, Parent and Tot Swim, Cops and Kids evening activities, as well as other recreational swim and gym programming.
Our After School Program provides a safe and caring environment for your children to learn and grow. We offer various after school activities which cater to your child’s interests. Each after school class focuses on character development and team building. Our well trained and qualified staff are committed to treating all of our participants with respect and dignity. PA days and holidays are not included. Please see our Camp section for more details on our PA Day Camps, March Break Camp, and Summer Camp. The After School Program operates each school day during the year.

Once participants arrive to University Settlement they put their backpacks and jackets away and get ready for a nutritious snack. At 4:30pm they are escorted to the program which they have signed up for. From 4:30pm until 5:30pm they are engaged in specialty programs. From 5:30pm – 6pm you can come pick up your child from our facility.
Activities and Programs:
We offer specialized classes for grade 1 and up such as: Hands-On Science, Coding, Book Club, Performance Arts, DIY Creations, Cooking, Lego Club, Graphic Design, and so much more! Your child can change classes termly, or stay in the classes they love and hone their skills further! Children are grouped as grade 1-2, grade 3+ and JK/SK. The JK/SK classroom does not select weekly classes, but instead receives a variety of them all, allowing them to be exposed to many different activities and develop varied interests.
We have different options for registration. If you are looking for 5 days a week for the entire 2017/2018 school year (Sept – June), you can register starting June 3 2017. If you are looking to register termly, or for 1-4 days a week, registration is on August 12 2017 for the 2017 Fall term (September to December). Winter term runs from January – April, and Spring term runs from April – June.
Parents must be Agency Members in order to enroll their children in our After School Program. Subsidies may be available for eligible clients.
After School Program fee per day: $12.00
For those days when school is out our Camps are in! We have March Break Camp, PA Day Camps as well as Summer Camp. Registration dates can be found in our newsfeed. We will update the information as it becomes available. Our facilities include a 25 yard indoor pool, a large and fully equipped gymnasium, classrooms, a computer lab and an adjacent parkland. Our camps are available at our 23 Grange Road site only.
Summer Camp Our camp begins July 4 and ends August 25, 2017. We provide a healthy lunch every day. Camp starts at 9am and ends at 4:30pm each day. Early drop-off and late pickup are available for an additional fee.
Butterfly Camp is for children ages 4-5 and includes age appropriate activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, cooperative games, dance and music.
The Ladybug Camp is for children between the ages of 6 and 7 and includes sports, swimming, arts and crafts as well as games and music.
Adventure Camp is for campers who are a tad bit older, from 8 to 12, we offer a more action packed days filled with science projects, field trips, sports and swimming.
Academic Camp is for children ages 8 to 12. In the morning, under the direction of a qualified children’s educator, we provide Math, English and other academic learning activities. In the afternoon our Academic Camp kids enjoy camp activities such as trips and swimming.
Swim Camp is for children ages 8 to 12 who have completed Level 5 or higher of Red Cross Swim. In the afternoon, under the direction of a qualified swim instructor, children will participate in various pool activities such as inner tube water polo, water basketball, relay races, and more. In the morning children will join Adventure Camp activities such as trips and swimming
March Break Camp Join our March Break Camp! Every year we play host to children aged 4-12 for March Break Camp. Our camp is a full day camp with an early drop off and late pickup option. Our instructors plan age appropriate activities which include science projects, swimming, arts and crafts, sports and field trips. PA Day Camp Our PA Day Camp (no school) option gives families a way to access an affordable program for children in our community. The Camp integrates fun and learning and allows children to participate to their fullest potential. . Through sports, arts and crafts, skill-based games, cooking, computers, and other child-directed activities allow everyone to explore their skills and learn new ones.
