Our Team

Management Team

Our key asset at University Settlement is our staff. We employ approximately 150 full time and part time staff in diverse roles including settlement services, community development, child care, aquatics, recreation, English language instruction, music and dance and administration. We recruit our staff based on their expertise, knowledge and skills in their respective fields of service. We believe in our staff and are confident that they are a reflection of our vision for a better community.

David Prendergast

David Prendergast has been an accomplished leader in the non-profit sector for over 19 years. He obtained his Bachelor of Social Work and Masters of Social Work degrees recently. These degrees compliment his Bachelor of Administrative Studies degree and guide him in his current role as the Executive Director at University Settlement. When not at University Settlement, David volunteers as a counselor, reads and loves to travel.



Ida Bertolini

Ida has the distinction of being one of the few staff members who have been with University Settlement for over 20 years! She is a graduate of the Institute of Child Study at the University of Toronto and has been the Director of the Day Care since 1986.  Ida and her staff are committed to ensuring that the Day Care serves as a second home for the children in their care.  In her spare time, Ida enjoys hiking and taking on home improvement projects.

Lily Chan
Director of Settlement and Social Services

Lily, who is responsible for overseeing programs and services for newcomers, older adults and community development, has been with University Settlement since 2000. She has a background in psychology, economics, internal audit and teaching English as a Second Language. She enjoys reading.

Agnes Chung

Our director of the Language Department is fluent in both English and Chinese. She has been an ESL and LINC instructor in the past and has a passion for teaching. She enjoys learning new things.

Elisa Ho

Elisa began working at University Settlement in 2002, bringing a strong set of skills including social work and IT which helped the Employment and Training department in expanding to serve the general public while providing a wide spectrum of employment and training programs. When not at work Elisa enjoys sampling new cuisine, finding out about new trends and traveling.

Ted Thompson
Director, Facilities and Recreation

Ted brings a wealth of knowledge to University Settlement with over 30 years experience in managing recreation facilities. Former Director of the JCC of Toronto, he is a champion badminton player and loves to play anything from chess to floor hockey. Ask Ted about “floating homes” when you see him!

Anne Yardley
Director of Music and Arts

Anne has worked at University Settlement’s Music and Arts School since 1988. Before taking the position of Director in 2002, Anne taught voice lessons to many students, young and old, and founded the Music Theatre program for children. Anne also plays piano, flute and organ. A graduate of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, Anne has many years of experience as both performer and teacher. Anne’s ideal evening is watching old movies and cuddling on the couch with her husband while enjoying a glass or two of white wine!

Behnaz has joined University Settlement in 2009 as the Manager of Settlement Services. She is experienced in working with immigrant and refugees from around the world. She has the passion to work with newcomers to Canada since she has been a newcomer herself.

Tarik Bacchus

Tarik has worked with University Settlement in multiple roles since 2007, primarily with jobseekers and homeless members of our community. Apart from Social Service work, Tarik has a passion for the performing arts and performed musically and theatrically for many years. Tarik also enjoys spending time with his family and hitting the gym whenever he can.

Starting with University Settlement as a CAP youth worker in 2010, Ena has grown with University Settlement and has been in her new role since late 2012. With her BA from York University and background in finance, she is responsible for the implementation of University Settlement’s Strategic Plan. In her spare time she plays volleyball and travels.

 Frances Ng

Frances started with University Settlement in 2001 and is the Manager of Finance. She used to play basketball in highschool and likes the outdoors.
