Volunteers: The Out of the Cold Program has many volunteer opportunities available. For more information please contact the Program Assistant.

Welcome to University Settlement’s Out of the Cold Program. We offer emergency based shelter on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights to those who find themselves in need. We offer shelter as well as snacks, dinner and breakfast. Beds are on a first come first serve basis.

Available services include meals, accommodations, a clothing bank, shower facilities during program hours, a social worker to provide counseling and referrals to other services including medical and housing. We are open from 5:30 pm to 6:30 am, Friday-Sunday from October to May and Saturday and Sunday only from June to September.

There are over 5,000 homeless individuals in Toronto; over 400 sleeping outside on an average night and both of these numbers continue to grow. With the economy still recovering from the recent recession, this will continue to be a priority issue for Canada’s urban centres for the foreseeable future. In 1997, University Settlement saw the need that was growing in our community and responded by providing Toronto’s only year-round, secular weekend shelter to men, women and couples in downtown Toronto.

- Boots
- Jackets, light or heavy
- T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters
- Pants, especially jeans
- Toiletries such as disposable razors, toothbrushes, brushes, combs, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, shaving cream, toothpaste, alcohol-free mouthwash, alcohol-free hand sanitizer
- Sleeping bags
- Towels
- Comforters

Unfortunately University Settlement is unable to accept donations of used clothing, however the nearby St Felix Centre and Scott Mission can accept these gently used items.

Corporate

Like many non-profit organizations we really depend on the generosity of our donors and volunteers. As a corporate donor, you have the opportunity to contribute to your community while also getting involved and letting the public know that you care about making Toronto a more livable city for everyone. In addition, as a registered charitable organization, University Settlement is able to provide tax receipts for all eligible donations, including both financial and in kind gifts.

For businesses both big and small, we can give you an opportunity to make a real difference in your community. And if you’d like to see the impact your donation makes, please contact us and we can arrange for a group of your staff to come out and volunteer for the night to see the program and the difference it makes every day.

xWinter Relief – Dinner Only
From the first Friday in November to the last Sunday in March visitors are able to come in for a dinner only without having to stay the night. Please come by on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. While we try to accommodate everyone, dinners are available on a first come, first served basis.
