We are proud to present a FREE screening of In the Shadow of Gold Mountain, a National Film Board of Canada documentary film, followed by a special bilingual (Mandarin and English) workshop.

In Shadow of Gold Mountain examines:

  • What was Chinese people’s role in bringing Canada to confederation?
  • What happened to the Chinese workers after completing the railway?
  • What were the Federal Governments’ polices towards Chinese immigrants?
  • Head Tax Redress

The workshop features three speakers:

  • Karen Cho: Director of In the Shadow of Gold Mountain
  • Helen Lee: The granddaughter of Foon Hay Lum, a Head Tax Redress advocate, will share the story of three generations of advocacy in her family (her grandmother, her mother and herself).
  • Winnie Ng: A prominent labor advocate who has recently completed a Chinese workers’ history in Canada.
