Leo Choi

Johnny Lai is a pianist and a teacher based in Toronto, Ontario with over 5 years of teaching experience and over 15 years playing the piano. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree as well as a certificate in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Toronto in 2023. Johnny is looking forward to sharing his musical knowledge to help children succeed through effective pedagogy techniques, including both traditional and contemporary methods.

Biography

Leo graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Master of Arts in Music degree and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Music with First Class Honors from the Academy of Music at HKBU. He received a fellowship from the Hong Kong University Grants Committee to pursue his master’s degree and was chosen as one of four students for the piano performance dissertation project, achieving outstanding results in the graduation concert.

Leo began his piano journey at the age of six under the guidance of teacher Miss Mia Wong. He continued his studies with Dr. Kawai Chan and currently studies with Mr. Stephen Wong. Leo actively participates in masterclasses conducted by renowned figures such as Dr. Amy Sze, Miss Nancy Loo, Dr. Yoonie Han (Steinway Artists), Mr. Normal Nee (Steinway Artists), and Miss Carol Yu (Steinway Artists), among others. Additionally, he takes piano performance and education classes with Dr. Geneva Fung, Mr. Alan Chun, Prof. David Cheung, and Dr. Elsa Lee.

Beyond his academic achievements, Leo has been an active participant in piano concerts, including the “Music and Friends 2022 Concert,” “Reverie: Fantasia of France Concert,” and “Piano Tricks or Treats Concert.” He has also garnered success in various competitions, securing the 1st runner-up position in the Diploma Category of the “7th Hong Kong Youth Piano Competition” in 2020, the 2nd runner-up in the Classical Sonata Category of the “2021 Elite Piano Competition,” and achieving the Championship and “Best Performer” title in the Chopin Polonaise Class Category of the “2023 Faber Piano Competition and Music Festival” in the Hong Kong and Macau region.

In the field of education, Leo received the “Award of Excellence Education Guidance” from the Hong Kong Youth Performance Art and Development Association. With over five years of teaching experience, he has instructed students ranging from three and a half years old to adults, with many achieving successes in competitions and receiving distinctions in exams. Notably, one of his students won the 1st runner-up in the Grade 5 category at the “2023 Global Outstanding Young Musicians Competition,” and another excelled with a remarkable score of 138/150 in the Royal Academy of Music Grade 3 exam.

Leo’s academic excellence has been recognized with numerous scholarships, including the Talent Development Scholarship (TDS) from the Hong Kong government. Hong Kong Baptist University acknowledged him with the “Outstanding Academic Performance” Award and the “Outstanding Achievement Award” for achieving the highest cumulative grade point average (Cgpa) in his course year. Consistently making the President’s Honour Roll from 2018 to 2023, Leo has also been listed as a “Distinguished Alumni” in his high school’s journal. He holds a Distinction in Grade 8 Piano from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and the ATCL Diploma in Piano Performance from Trinity College, London. Additionally, he possesses the Grade 8 Theory qualification from ABRSM.
