Biography
Luyao Xu is an accomplished musician and dedicated educator, blending her profound knowledge in both piano and vocal instruction to inspire her students. With a Master’s degree in Education focusing on Developmental Psychology from the University of Toronto and another Master’s in Piano Pedagogy from Michigan State University, Luyao brings a unique perspective to music education, understanding deeply how individuals learn and grow.
Luyao’s musical journey began at a young age, captivated by her peers’ performances when she was just seven years old. This early passion has driven her to dedicate over 17 years to mastering the piano and vocal. Her academic achievements and extensive teaching experience reflect her commitment to nurturing musical talent.
Luyao imparted her expertise at the University Settlement, Willowdale School of Music and the City of Toronto, where she designed engaging, age-appropriate programs to cultivate a love for music among her students. She also serves as the Centre Coordinator for MusicBox Children’s Charity, playing a pivotal role in coordinating activities and nurturing young talents.
In addition to her work with children, Luyao has significant experience as a vocal coach assistant and collaborative pianist with the NeoVoce Philharmonic Choir in Toronto. Here, she enhances the vocal techniques of choir members aged 18 to 65 and contributes to high-quality performances through her skilled piano accompaniment. Her role involves developing vocal exercises and warm-up routines, supporting major concerts and competitions, and offering both individual and group instruction sessions. Also, she has been an Alto Member of the Hart House Singers Choir at the University of Toronto.
Luyao’s dedication extends beyond the classroom as she mentors music volunteers, conducts rehearsals, and serves as the accompanist for the choruses. Her mission is to instill a lifelong appreciation for music in her students, using it as a medium for self-expression and connection with the world. While her focus lies in classical music, particularly the Classical and Romantic periods, she remains open to contemporary genres and her students’ personal musical interests, ensuring a well-rounded musical education.
