Biography
Sherry graduated with B. Mus and B. Mus. Ed. from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1981 and moved to Toronto in 1986. From 1986-1998 she has worked as school teacher, accompanist, vocal coach, piano teacher and organist. She also music directed several musicals for a variety of community theatres and conducted a staff choir for the Bayer Company. She has been the accompanist for the community choir Jubilate Singers since 1987 and is founding member and arranger for Daughters of the Rock, an a cappella trio of women whose mandate is to showcase Newfoundland folk music and stories to mainland audiences.
She started teaching piano at St. Christopher House, now West Neighbourhood House, in 1987. Over the years she taught piano and theory individually, a pre-school music class and conducted and accompanied our children’s and adult choirs as well as a multi-language (English, Portuguese and Vietnamese) senior’s choir. She accepted the position of Coordinator of the Music School in October 1998. In addition to administrative responsibilities, she has developed and taught an enhanced music program designed for seniors. This program has been taught individually and in groups, in person and online. She also continues to accompany and conduct both choirs.
